I’ve become quite good at hosting, if I am allowed to say such things. Every month, on occasion twice a month I have two groups of 16 strangers in my home that I need to make feel welcome, relaxed and happy to be here. They are here for my Design Classes of course so each weekend there is a different set of people and it’s my job to make them feel happier and excited to be hanging in my pad. Here are some tips:
Lighting is such a game changer; I say this in my classes all the time. At this time of year overdose on tea lights – every tablescape in my pad has a scattering fairy lights.
COSY UP AREAS
Make your home as lounge-y and laid back as possible so it just shouts come chill. I soften sofas with throws, I put sheepskins over dining tables - textiles are such a transformative way of adding texture.
DECANTER YOUR WINE
I always way decant everything and put it into nice bottles or vessels, it makes such a visual difference.
I adore cooking, it's one of my favourite things about hosting guests. For me, great produce is the key to great cooking and I always make sure I try to go as local and organic as possible.
STOCK UP ON BASKETS
I love plonking things in baskets, not only do they make spaces feel super-cosy, they are perfect for a quick clean up.
GET THE SCENT RIGHT
I love a beautifully scented house from the moment anyone walks up the drive they can smell wood smoke. When you enter there are incense pyres quietly smoking away. Dig a bit deeper into my pad and you’ll find lavender burning in the bedroom in the form of an essential oil to the deeper resinous and but amazing amber and moss candles we sell that I burn in all other areas.
JAZZ IT UP
Finally but most importantly a good play list is key. I like jazzy, acoustic-y, lounge-y stuff! Any suggestions by the way gratefully received.
